Is this sketch only a anatomical study or possibly an early self-portrait by Reinhart? Himself drawn through a mirror or depicting a close friend, an artist? Dated "1788" with the watercolour on the reverse to the time while Reinhart lived in Meiningen. The Catalogue Raisonné of the artists works mentions that many of Reinharts drawings at the collection Redslob presumably been a acquisition from the landscape artist Carl Wagner, which lived also in Meiningen at that time and owned a rich collection of Reinharts drawings (see Feuchtmayr, p. 376). Interesting seems to us within this context also the influence of Oeser in Leipzig, Reinharts first teacher and friend. Furthermore the close friendship from Oeser and Winckelmann, which published scripts on the Greek ideal in painting and sculpture.
