The artist was known as a painter of architecture, primarily in watercolor. Son of Berthold Woltze, a painter of genre pieces and portraits. He studied in Weimar, Karlsruhe, Munich, Venice and Rome. He lived from 1886 until 1900 in the United States and in Mexico, then back in Germany he been activ in Frankfurt and since 1907 in Weimar. Several watercolors by his hand can be found in the collection of the Historical Museum in Frankfurt (Germany).

Beautiful Venetian view from Doge's Palace over the Piazzetta to the column of Markus, with a sailor seated and two officers with uniform in front. Behind a boot with red flag, presumably a war-ship of the Italian Navy.
